Trains are one of the earliest means of
transportation. They are still in usage to this very day. The only fact
is that it has undergone an ocean of evolution to be what it is today.
The railways of today are vastly different from what they were a
century or even fifty years ago. In spite of these developments, there
are a few trains like the toy train in Darjeeling. The Darjeeling hill
rail is increasingly popular as it is totally different from its
contemporary self. The Darjeeling train is on a large scale the most
popular and the most exciting railway in the country.
This railway is a treat for tourists who are sick
of their everyday life. This means of transportation enthralls a city
dweller for there is no other practical chance of him receiving another
such opportunity. The Darjeeling hill rail enjoys a history that is as
colorful as the ride itself, as exciting as a view from one of the
train’s window seats and as lovely as the climate of Darjeeling. The
trip is unforgettable to all the people as the whole journey is so
romantic. The history of the t
oy train in Darjeeling is an old one that
stretches back to the British rule in India.
In 1878 from Calcutta to Siliguri, the Himalayan
base a railway line was laid and the tonga service carried the
travelers to the hill journey. Tonga’s ascent led to discontent and the
idea of laying a steam tramway from Siliguri to Darjeeling emerged.
The tonga service served the travelers for more
than ten years, but the disadvantages as a means of communication
coerced the inception of laying a steam tramway. The Darjeeling hill
way was tough with the tongas and the need of the toy train in
Darjeeling became prominent..
The Darjeeling hill way was laid, but it was evident
that some grades were very steeper that the locomotives had to manage
with great difficulty. This is one of the reasons that travelers find
the train leaves the road completely and at times accomplishes
different alignment with the help of loops and reverses.
The engine employed originally was small enough to draw
only 7 tons load. Later this toy train in Darjeeling was improved to
draw 35 tons load. Similarly, the original train was a small four
wheeled trolley, but few years later, new bogies were introduced and
everything functioned perfectly.
